What is a charter school?
A charter school is an independently run public school. Charter schools are granted greater flexibility in their operations. In return for this flexibility charter schools are expected to perform at a higher level of standard on both test scores and graduation rates.
What grades are offered at the GREEN Charter School?
At our inception in the fall of 2013, GREEN Charter School opened with grades Kindergarten through 6th. Going forward GREEN will add one grade level each year with the anticipation of having Kindergarten through 12th grade by September 2019.
Is there a cost to attend your school?
Charter schools are tuition-free, like all public schools. All students, regardless of background, are eligible to submit an application for the lottery.
What is the student/teacher ratio at the GREEN Charter School?
The average class size is approximately 20 student. Each grade level has 2-4 classes, therefore the number of students per grade level varies. Smaller class sizes enable more one-on-one time between the teacher and students.
How can I find out about school closings such as holidays and early dismissal days?
All school closings, holidays and early dismissal days are listed on the school calendar issued at the beginning of the school year. If you do not have one, please contact the main office for another copy, or visit our website www.scgreencharter.org.
When there is a school closing due to inclement weather, how can I find out if the GREEN Charter School is closed?
School closings will be announced on all local television stations, our website and our Facebook page.
What should I do if my child is going to be absent from school?
If your child will be absent due to illness or injury, please email the main office and your child’s teachers as soon as possible. If your child will only miss part of the school day due to an appointment (e.g. doctor, dentist, etc.), please sign your child into or out of school in the main office.
How can I transfer my child to the GREEN Charter School?
To transfer into our school, the first step is to complete our online application. Once that is complete, you will either be (1) entered into the lottery for the next school year or (2) placed on the waitlist for the next school year if the lottery has already been run and the year for which you are applying has not yet started, or (3) put on the waitlist until a spot opens up if the year you wish to enter is already in progress.
Do you provide transportation, breakfast and/or lunch?
There will be no school bus service at the GREEN Charter School. Our school serves breakfast and lunch each school day and offers free and reduced price lunch to all eligible students. Parents/guardians are encouraged to fill out an application every year as the standards change.
My child has an IEP, or receives other special services; can you accommodate his/her needs?
Yes. We accommodate all children and their individual learning needs. Our resource coordinator will require a copy of your child's IEP or 504 plan in order to schedule them accordingly. You can request your child's current school to send us a copy if you do not have a current copy at home.
Does the GREEN Charter School offer tutoring?
Yes, we have a tutoring program at our school. Every student is eligible for extra help on an as needed basis. All of our teachers stay after school for extra help, or for students to make up missed work. A schedule of teachers staying after school will be made available at the beginning of each school year.
Does the GREEN Charter School have a Gifted "Challenge" Program?
GREEN Charter School recognizes all students who have qualified for the Gifted and Talented program through the state of South Carolina. Gifted classes start in 3rd grade and each gifted class is given advanced level work. GREEN utilizes the special class option instead of a “pull-out” system. This allows our students to be taught advanced work in each core subject every day.
The GREEN Charter School has implemented an Advanced Program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The Advance Program includes small group, advanced instruction in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. Students who are in Advanced Program also can earn high school credits in the middle school, such as Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, and Foreign Language. Criteria for entry are based on student benchmarks, classroom performance, teacher recommendation, and state test (PASS) results.
Is there a school uniform?
Yes. Every student is required to wear the school shirt and Khaki pants (or a skirt of knee length for girls). Jeans and leggings are not allowed. School shirts are available in short or long sleeve. Shorts are permitted in warm weather. PE uniform, which contains school shorts and shirts, will be available in the main office.
Besides an application, what other documents do I need?
Besides a completed application, the following documents are required after acceptance to the school:
· A copy of the applicant's birth certificate
· The most recent report card to verify grade applying for
· Proof of residency in the State of South Carolina
· Copy of IEP or 504 plan (if applicable)
· Copy of immunization record
· Home Language Survey
Who is eligible to attend the GREEN Charter School?
Any child who lives in the State of South Carolina is eligible to attend our school. Applicants are accepted on the basis of availability. Current students have first chance at a seat for the following school year.
